Splash Point

The Kittiwake colony at Splash Point, Seaford appears to have had a good year. There were dozens of the boldly striped juveniles on the cliffs and flying about.

Near by, in the sandy topsoil, I saw two species of Hymenoptera making tunnels.

A Beewolf, Philanthus triangulum, excavating a burrow. This large solitary wasp hunts honeybees.

A Hairy-legged Mining Bee, Dasypodo hirtipes. This bee was excavating its tunnel less than a metre from the Beewolf.

A juvenile Rock Pipit.
