Eastbourne

A short sea watch from Birling Gap on Sunday afternoon was enlivened by 70+ Brent Geese flying east.

Normally I see the Brent Geese flying west in the Autumn, then east in the Spring. There had been some mild, westerly-influenced weather during the preceding week, but is certainly still Winter in Siberia. These birds are likely to be moving between feeding grounds rather than migrating.

A recent sunrise over Eastbourne. The predominantly grey and cloudy weather has made this a rare sight,

King Alfred's Cakes. This is a saprophytic fungus that prefers to grow on fallen Ash trees, as it is here in Further Plantation, a fragment of ancient woodland on the edge of Willingdon golf course. If collected and dried, it makes an excellent fire lighter.
