Wood Anemomes
Further Plantation is an area of ancient woodland that forms part of the scarp wood, along the edge of the downs. It lies around the southern side of Willingdon golf course. At this time of year parts of the wood are carpeted with Wood Anemones, a flower associated with ancient woodland.
A pair of Green Woodpeckers appear to be breeding in Further Plantation this spring. In addition to their characteristic 'yaffle' call I heard these birds make a much gentler 'mewing' sound, which was new for me.
