Further up the hill is a marvellous chalk heath. The recent grazing regime has really benefited the Ling, Cross-leaved Heath and Heather. They were in full flower and awash with butterflies: Common Blue, Chalkhill Blue, Meadow Brown with three Clouded Yellows spotted.

Strange behaviour by a bird on a path alerted me to a large Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar. The bird was repeatedly hopping forward and tentatively pecking at something that was wriggling in a reptile like way.
