Summer Holiday Day 19: Chester Zoo, part 5 - Islands and Africa

This section of the zoo, called islands, was completely new to me. In the past it had always bee one of the most underdeveloped areas. Now it is packed with interesting animals and includes another substantial tropical house.

Prevost's Squirrel

Visayan Warty Pig

Dusky Pademelon

Bali Starling

Javan Sparrow

Red Jungle Fowl

Great argus

Tentacled Snake

Yellow-spotted Tree Toad

Rhinoceros Hornbill

Grossbeak Starling

Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot

Cinnamon Ground Dove

Pink-necked Pigeon

Fea's Flying Frog

Malayan Sail-finned Lizard

Sunda Gharial

Chester Zoo has a long history of keeping Sumatran and Bornean Orang Utang. These species are now in different areas of the zoo. The group of Sumatran, quietly foraging in their enclosure was another highlight of my visit.

Sulawesi Crested Macaque

One of the newer sections of the zoo is African themed. Incorporating the old rhino enclosures.

Greater Flamingo. Another huge group of flamingos in another huge, roofed over aviary. This one African themed.

White-faced Whistling Duck

White Headed Duck

Eastern Black Rhino

Warthog

Yellow Mongoose

Hunting Dog

Hidden Savannah is another new (to me) animal house, with reptiles and small mammals. It included a large open vivarium containing several species.

Geyr's Spiny-tailed Lizard (left) with Starred Agama

Barbary Stripped Grass Mouse

Karoo Round-eared Sengi

Hooded Vulture

Eastern Black Rhinoceros

Swinhoe's Stripped Squirrel

Last port of call was the old Pachyderm House. Now home to Asian Elephants with other smaller species.
