France 1: Newhaven to Dieppe Crossing

We caught the ferry from Newhaven on a beautifully calm morning, with the sea like a mill pond. Ideal conditions to look for seabirds and ceteceans.

Newhaven Harbour with the parched South Downs behind.

Near the shore and in the harbour there were Redshank, Oystercatcher, Cormorant, Black-headed Gull, Herring Gull, Lesser and Great Black-backed Gull. As the ferry moved further out I saw Gannet (50+), Fulmar, two Manx Shearwater and three Black Terns.

There were three sightings of ceteceans  The first two were very distant and brief, but the third was closer and sustained. From the shape of the dorsal fins I was able to identify two Minke Whales.
