Adder

This Adder was basking in the sun near Beachy Head. I think the darker colour of the paler scales identify it as a female. There was quite a cold wind,  and when the sun went behind a cloud the snake would coil itself into a tight ball.

The eye of this Adder was quite cloudy, the red colour is only just visible. I suspect this might indicate it is due to shed its skin relatively soon.

I this photo the sun was out and the snake had flattened itself dorso-ventrally to increase the surface area exposed to the warm rays.
