The Lake, Hampden Park

The closeness of the Rookery, near the lake in the park, means these shy birds can be approached. Rooks don't like being noticed.

We counted at eight Heron nests on the island.

Oak Woodland, Hampden Park

 Such a beautiful wood. The magnificent Oaks are about 200 years old.

Hampden Park

An early morning walk in Hampden Park and the streams were in full spate, with areas of the wood flooded. The birdsong was astonishing, with large numbers of Redwing in the high canopy. Heard my first drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker. 

Sour Cherry coming into flower. 

 

Exciting action at the Heronry on the island. A male, in marvellous breeding colour, bellowing and raising his crest to scare away two rival males.

Summer Holiday Day 21: Oak Woodland, Hampden Park

 

The most confiding Rook I have ever come across; it had joined up with a crew of Jackdaws, Crows and Pigeons that have become accustomed to being fed by visitors to the park. Normal Rook-reticence had been abandoned.

This Stock Dove, however, was high in the Oak canopy and much more typically cautious.
