Garden Insects

A hot July and early August brought some interesting insects to Hill Road.

A Cinnamon Bug, Corizus hyoscyami. The word bug is often used as a nonspecific synonym for insect or invertebrate, but in this case the name is accurate as it is member of the Hemiptera or 'true bugs', which are distinguished by their piercing and sucking mouthparts.Cinnamon Bugs used to be confined to the south coast of Britain, but are now widespread as far as Yorkshire.

Hummingbird Hawkmoth. This species is sporadically attracted to the Valerian in our garden right through the summer.

A mature male Common Darter, Sympetrum striolatum.
