Great Spotted Woodpecker

This male has just a hint of red on its cap, suggesting it hatched this summer. At Beachy Head.

House Martins

Amazing numbers of House Martins, with a few Sand Martins and Swallows, gathered over Beachy Head. Must have been several thousand.

Ivy Bees

I have been managing my front lawn for wild flowers for nearly three years. The August mow has exposed quite a bit of bare earth, and we have an 'eruption' of Ivy Bees. My wife has had to put out a note to reassure the postman.

Golden-banded Dragonfly

This is the first time I have seen this species in the UK. I spent ages, one afternoon in Brittany, trying to photograph them. They hunt very actively and low over the water, and this makes it almost impossible. Luckily David Walsh and Tim, two naturalists I met at Old Lodge, spotted this individual as it landed to feed.
