Knepp

Lovely mature Oak Trees at Knepp.

The birdsong was marvellous with Chiffchaff, Blackbird, Blackcap, Robin, Chaffinch, Song Thrush, Goldcrest, Wren and Common Whitethroat. In addition were Garden Warbler, Cuckoo, Lesser Whitethroat and Nightingale.

Several times White Storks were visible in the air. At the nest tree two chicks were visible, gaping in the warm sun. An adult collected nesting material and flew up to join them.

The sun came out and suddenly it was summer. The beautiful, clear water of the ditch network opposite the church had lots of odonata activity, with Beautiful Demoiselle, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Emperor Dragonfly, Broad-bodied Chaser and several other species.

A Cuckoo startled some Woodpigeon then began to call. Overhead were Swift, Swallow, House Martin, Buzzard and Sparrowhawk. Heron hunted in the ditches. Sedge, Reed and Cettis Warbllers called fromm the reeds with Reed Bunting.

Nearly best of all were a pair of Yellowhammer, with the male in splendid plumage.
